The programme has been granted scholarships from the European Union Erasmus Mundus Programme for 2010-2012
The Students Union at HWU, Polimi and UmU offers many activities for all students and has a range of international student societies reflecting the many nationalities. For example, at HWU at the beginning of the academic year the Students Union organises a full range of social activities especially designed to introduce new international students to life at Heriot-Watt University and Edinburgh. The Chaplaincy International Visitor organises outings to places of interest in Scotland for all international students and also arranges meetings for their accompanying spouses and families. Another Chaplaincy service is the possibility of being matched with a local family in order to take part in home visits. The Musician in Residence organises a full programme of musical activities including the university orchestra and choir, in which many international students play an active part. A well-attended regular event is the international meal held every Wednesday evening in the Chaplaincy to allow international students to get together.
At Polimi, there is an Erasmus Student Network (ESN), an international student-run organisation to promote mobility by helping incoming and outgoing students. They organise parties, trips and other events with foreign and Italian students, to enable them to share experiences and advice about life as an international student, and help them keep in touch after their stay.
The goals of ESN are:
(1) improving the social integration of foreign students at the host institution;
(2) providing more adequate information about exchange programmes;
(3) taking advantage of exchange students' experience by making them active in the network;
(4) continuously contributing to the evaluation of the European exchange programmes based on the experiences of former exchange students. In order to pursue these goals, during the academic semesters of every year ESN organises 4 cultural trips around Italy and guided visits to the famous monuments in Milan. The services and activities are run by student volunteers. Furthermore, Masters Course students will join students attending other Master at MIP, a good opportunity for social integration.
At UmU, Masters Course students are invited to attend an orientation week immediately before the start of the semester with an introduction to culture, studies, city and campus, access to School services such as counselling, computer labs and computer accounts, and library access. Social, cultural and sports activities will be organised during the semester. The students may also join the Business School Student Association.
